JORDAN’S HEART dove into an instant free fall.

He’d promised himself he’d keep his hands off Ashley tonight, promised himself he wouldn’t proposition her or make any sexual advances. He’d managed fairly well so far, but his teeth were nearly aching with the effort.

But now she said…She wanted…

He glanced at the lineup ahead of them. Three carts to go. Three full carts.

He checked out the lineups stretching off to the right. Then those to the left.

Damn.

Why were there only a dozen checkouts open? Didn’t these people know that their customers had things to do? How the hell was anyone supposed to get out of here?

He supposed ditching the fruit, lifting Ashley into his arms and sprinting for the exit would look way too eager.

“Jordan?”

He wondered wildly if he could bribe the woman in front of them to get the hell out of the way.

“Jordan?”

“Huh?” He stared down at her, blinking.

“I, uh, asked you a question…” A flush crept up on her face. “And you didn’t answer—”

“Yes,” he cut in, amazed that she couldn’t already tell. “The answer is yes, yes, yes.”

He reached for her arm, sliding his hand down the length of it, lacing his fingers with hers because he couldn’t go another second without touching her. “Oh.” Her flush deepened. “I was afraid—”

He let go of her hand and slipped his arm around her waist, trying to make it look casual, trying to make it look as though they were simply a friendly couple.

“Don’t be afraid of anything,” he whispered close to her ear.

The checkout clerk handed the first customer his receipt, then she greeted the next person in line. Still two carts to go. Jordan was never going to make it.

“I want you, Ashley,” he muttered in her ear. “I so want you.”

“Price-check on ten,” the cashier said into her intercom. “Dumaire’s Fine Canned Tuna. Eight-ounce size.” Her tinny voice echoed through the store.

“I want you, too,” said Ashley, a smile in her voice.

“Jordan. It’s ‘I want you, Jordan.”’

“I want you, Jordan.” She had such a gorgeous voice—and a gorgeous everything else, too.

The cashier scanned a loaf of bread. She scanned it again. Then she sighed and punched in the UPC number by hand.

Jordan glanced back at the other lineups, hoping for a reprieve. The one at the far end seemed to be moving faster. There was a packer down there. But two people had pulled in behind them in this lineup, and he didn’t dare move. “Is it always this busy here?” He tried not to sound too desperate.

“Usually.”

“Why don’t you shop somewhere else?”

“It’s close to my apartment.”

“Well, thank goodness for that at least.” Jordan wasn’t sure if he could make a long drive. And he doubted Ashley would be willing to pull over and make love in the back seat halfway home.

The cashier chatted with
